The problem

The North Face has a problem most outdoor brands share. Its core audience is aging, and the audience it needs grew up with smartphones and spends less time outdoors. The brief was to reach Gen Z without talking down to them about screen time or lecturing them about nature, and without betraying what the brand stands for.

Gen Z doesn't need to be told to go outside. They need to be shown that outside is worth the effort.

The insight

Exploration is a mindset, not a place. You can explore a mountain, a neighbourhood you have never walked through or a conversation you have never started. The brand's equity is in that spirit, not the altitude.

  1. Reframe the barrier

Gen Z's distance from outdoor brands is about access and identity rather than apathy. The brand has to signal inclusion without leaving its heritage behind.

  2. Use the phone, don't fight it

This generation documents everything. The phone can be the tool of exploration rather than its enemy.

  3. The first step is enough

The brand doesn't need someone to climb a mountain. It needs them to open a door.

The campaign

The creative territory is "The First Step Out": the moment of departure, before the summit and before the finish line.

  1. Film

A hero spot with no voiceover and no product shot. The logo appears only at the end.

  2. Social

"My First Step": film your first step out today, in 15 seconds, with no destination required.

  3. Out of home

Physical doorframes at subway exits and park entrances, so walking through one becomes part of the campaign.

  4. Retail

A topographic map of the surrounding city on the floor of every store entrance.

AI as a production tool

AI did not produce the insight, the strategy or the concept. Those came first. AI then made it possible to visualize ideas in many variations within hours, and to keep one visual language across formats.

The real skill is art direction. Vague prompts produce generic work, so the value is in describing precisely what you are trying to achieve.

What I took from it

This project was a lesson in arriving at a real insight before doing any creative work. Production tools keep getting cheaper. What stays valuable is briefing them with enough precision and strategic intent that the result means something, and that is the skill I am building deliberately.
